Shenzhen union digs deep into pocket to help poor

On 20 August 2014, the Shenzhen Municipal Trade Union Federation and the Shenzhen Fund for Struggling Workers launched a crusade to help children of poverty-stricken workers back to school. So far they have handed out more than 1 million yuan to 337 disadvantaged students in the city.

It is reported that the aid recipients will be on-the-job workers with average family income below 930 yuan, plus children of struggling families with members suffering from serious illness.

So far, 377 children have been found eligible for assistance. Of these, 113 are high school students, who have been awarded a grant of 2,000 yuan each, while the remaining 264, mostly college students, have received 3,000 yuan.

Since 2002, the trade union and the fund have granted a total subsidy of 9.52 million yuan to 4,022 impoverished students.
