A training seminar on Enhancing Rights and Social Protection for Migrant Workers was held in Colombo from April 6-10. Co-sponsored by the ILO’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities and International Training Centre (ACTRAV/ITC-ILO) in collaboration with the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the seminar brought together 19 participants from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam as well as the ACFTU.
The seminar aimed to build up the technical capacity of trade union representatives to promote the rights and social protection of migrant workers. During the training, the participants not only shared experience but also studied issues concerning labour migration and migrant workers in the Asia-Pacific Region, thus gaining a better understanding of the ILO Migrant Workers’ Convention (C97 and C143), the ILO Recommendation on Social Protection Floor (R 202) and the ILO Convention on Social Security (C 102). The participants also discussed ways to carry out follow-up actions with a view to further promoting decent work for migrant workers in their countries.
