Mr. Li Jianguo, Chair, All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU)
Ladies and gentlemen, friends:
It is a great pleasure for me to declare the 2014 International Forum on Economic Globalization and Trade Unions open. I am delighted to be with you here in Beijing. On behalf of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, I wish to extend warm congratulations on the opening of this forum and a cordial welcome to all our trade union friends who have come to participate.
Nine sessions of the International Forum on Economic Globalization and Trade Unions have been held since it was launched. It has emerged as an important platform for promoting equal exchanges, mutual understanding and cooperation among trade union organizations throughout the world. As such, it has played a major role in safeguarding and realizing the interests of workers the world over and in promoting the healthy development of the international labor movement. The current forum, which has brought together over 70 leaders of international and regional trade union organizations as well as those from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe, has provided an excellent opportunity for friends both old and new to gather together to share their views on a wide range of issues, voice their concerns and wishes, and build consensus under the theme of “Reform, Development and Dream”. It will go a long way toward improving the current global political and economic order, boosting the healthy development of the world economy and advancing the interests of workers. Undoubtedly a forum such as this will do much to help workers to attain their dreams.
At present, the Chinese people are working hard to achieve the dream of the great revival of the Chinese nation put forth by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese President. Through long-term development, particularly through the practice of reform and opening up over the past 30 years, the Chinese people have realized that to achieve the Chinese dream, the nation must be bold in carrying out exploration, innovation and reform. In November last year, the Third Plenary Session of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China adopted the Decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Some Major Issues Concerning Comprehensively Deepening the Reform. This laid out a general plan for deepening reform in an all-round manner, as well as defining that overall goal and putting forward a reform roadmap and timetable. The Decision deals with key issues in 15 fields and maps out 330 reform measures concerning the economy, politics, cultural issues, social matters, environmental development and Party building. 2014 is the first year for implementing the decision of the CPC Central Committee to comprehensively deepen reform and ushering in a new round of reform. Current reforms are proceeding in an orderly, efficient and stable manner. Aimed at improving and developing the socialist system with Chinese characteristics, and pressing on with the goal of modernizing the national governance system and governance capacity, these reforms have been designed to tackle deep-rooted problems hampering China’s economic and social development, adjust interest relationships and interest patterns, and send out numerous positive signals to all the people, not least workers, thus winning the widespread support of the population as a whole, including the broad masses of workers as well as various sectors of society, trade unions among them. The broad masses of the people are profoundly convinced that the reforms are bound to succeed, that they will give a vigorous boost to China’s economic and social development, bringing benefits to the public, and that China’s future will thus be brighter.
