A delegation of the US United Auto Workers (UAW) union led by Maureen Fitzsimons visited Beijing and Shanghai from July 25 to 31.
ACFTU Vice-Chair Jiang Guangping met the delegation and provided a glimpse into the ACFTU’s current work priorities and efforts to protect Chinese workers on overseas projects. He made clear the ACFTU’s stance against trade protectionism and expressed his concern over the violation of workers’ rights by American multinationals operating in China. The UAW delegation explained the problems facing the American trade union movement and the response of the trade unions. And both sides expressed their commitment to further strengthen their exchanges and cooperation.
The delegation met the Chinese Machineray, Metallurgical and Building Workers Union and visited Beijing Workers Service Center before heading for Shanghai, where they had a meeting with the Shanghai Municipal Trade Union Council and visited Shanghai GM factory.
